Life-wide Learning | Other Learning Experiences

Life-wide Learning


Life-wide Learning is a strategy which extends student learning from the classroom to other learning contexts. It aims to let students learn beyond the classroom and acquire different essential learning experiences in authentic contexts. Engaging in diverse Life-wide Learning activities, students are enabled to find out their interests and potential, develop and apply various generic skills as well as nurture positive values and attitudes in order to achieve whole-person development.


Five Essential Learning Experiences


Schools can flexibly make use of various settings and deploy resources available in our community in order to, with suitable combinations of time, place and people, create suitable learning contexts to implement Life-wide Learning. Schools should enable students to acquire the following five essential learning experiences and ensure they are given equal Life-wide Learning opportunities:


1. Intellectual Development (mostly through classroom learning in KLAs)

2. Values Education (character formation)

3. Community Service

4. Physical and Aesthetic Development

5. Career-related Experiences


Schools may also connect with different organisations in our community to provide students with quality life-wide learning programmes so as to enrich their learning experiences.


Life-wide Learning creates opportunities for students to acquire experiential learning in real contexts. It helps students to achieve the aims of whole-person development and enables them to develop the life-long learning capabilities that are needed in our ever-changing society.



Other Learning Experiences


Under the Senior Secondary Curriculum, Other Learning Experiences (OLE) is one of the three components that complement the core and elective subjects (including Applied Learning courses) for the whole-person development of students. Building on the foundation of the five Essential Learning Experiences in Primary 1 to Secondary 3, schools will further offer senior secondary students a range of OLE opportunities encouraging them to participate in the following five areas of OLE:


1.          Values Education

2.          Community Service

3.          Career-related Experiences

4.          Aesthetic Development

5.          Physical Development


Quality Rather Than Quantity Matters


When implementing OLE, due consideration should be given to the overall planning on the expected learning objectives and outcomes of the respective learning experiences. Emphasis should be put on student reflection to deepen and consolidate students’ own learning, and help them nurture lifelong learning capability to foster whole-person development.
